The year is a quarter of the way in and Easter is upon us already! For many of us, Easter means chocolate and hot cross buns, and often signals a time when all of our healthy eating comes undone. There is no harm in having an Easter treat, but make sure you follow Melanie’s helpful advice to understand how to best approach the upcoming holiday.
It is important to be aware of the serving size and serves per product, as it is easy to eat all our Easter eggs in one go! There is often at least two servings within each product (for example a chocolate egg or
bunny)…which means those kilojoules add up quickly without even realising. To put it into perspective, there are six serves in a 150 gram bunny!
Many people assume that because they are eating dark chocolate, it is okay. A dark chocolate bunny and a white chocolate Easter egg actually have very similar nutritional profiles (many people think dark chocolate is a much “healthier” alternative, however the energy, fat and sugar contents are very comparable). Instead of focusing on what type of chocolate you are eating, have a look at the portion size instead.
If hot cross buns are more appealing to you, try and limit yourself to one only. One hot cross bun is similar to eating two slices of toast, just be wary of the amount of butter you slather on top! This is where the kilojoules add up. Also, it’s best to go for the traditional version rather than the choc-chip, this way you are eating less saturated fat.
Have a look at the tables below for the nutritional profile of some common Easter treats…
